Methodology & Research Partnership

How Kenya's Tourism Data Is Produced

Transparency in methodology is essential for data credibility. All KTB research is produced in partnership with the Tourism Research Institute (TRI) — Kenya's national tourism data authority — using established international methodologies.

Data Collection Methods

Kenya's tourism statistics are collected through three primary instruments, each designed to capture different dimensions of visitor flows and economic impact.

Tourist Exit Survey (TES) — Face-to-face interviews conducted with departing international visitors at JKIA and Mombasa International Airport. The 2023 survey covered 12,400 interviews across all peak and shoulder travel periods, capturing spend patterns, satisfaction, purpose of visit, activities, and accommodation preferences.
Arrival Card / E-Visa Data — Electronic capture from the Kenya Department of Immigration of all international arrivals by nationality, purpose, and port of entry. This provides the primary volume data for arrivals statistics. Updated monthly.
Accommodation Occupancy Survey — Monthly survey of registered accommodation establishments (hotels, lodges, camps, serviced apartments) covering occupancy rates, average daily rate (ADR), and revenue per available room (RevPAR). Sample covers approximately 480 establishments across all regions and categories.
Air Seat Capacity Data — Air capacity and load factor data sourced from Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and airline operational reports, providing the basis for air connectivity analysis in quarterly and annual reports.
International Standards

Kenya's tourism statistics are compiled in accordance with international standards, ensuring comparability with global benchmarks and credibility for international use.

UNWTO International Recommendations for Tourism Statistics (IRTS 2008) — the global framework for tourism data compilation
Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) framework for economic contribution measurement, aligned with UN System of National Accounts
ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) standards for MICE event classification and enumeration
Data limitations and caveats

Users of Kenya tourism statistics should note: international arrival counts reflect immigration records and may include same-day visitors in some periods; Tourist Exit Survey data reflects a sample survey and carries sampling margins; accommodation statistics cover registered establishments only — informal accommodation is not fully captured; MICE event data covers KTB-registered international events and may not include all domestic association meetings. All figures are revised as improved data becomes available. Refer to individual report methodology appendices for full caveats. For queries contact research@ktb.go.ke.
