Long before the awards and the rankings, Muthaiga was a course carved into the edge of Karura Forest by a small community determined to build something lasting.
Early Years
A club already in motion before it had papers to prove it.
Muthaiga's earliest surviving records place it in existence from the early 1920s, well before it was formally incorporated. By 1922, the club already had a president and a golf captain in place — evidence of a functioning institution, not a fledgling one.
It would be another two decades before the club's legal foundations caught up with what its members had already built.

A club before its charter
In existence and serving members years before formal incorporation, with a functioning committee structure already in place by the early 1920s.
Incorporation
Muthaiga Golf Club was formally incorporated as a company limited by guarantee on 29 September 1943, giving legal form to an institution that had operated informally for two decades.
The first Kenya Open
Muthaiga hosted what would become the Kenya Open Golf Tournament for the first time — an event so successful it has returned to the club ever since, carrying the course's name to golfers well beyond Kenya.
A course reborn
South African designer Peter Matkovich was engaged to reconstruct the course; it reopened on 6 November 2004, with new lakes and water features and greens regarded as the fastest in East Africa.
Tournament Legacy
A course that carried its own name abroad.
Once the Kenya Open found a home at Muthaiga in 1967, the club's reputation stopped being a purely local matter. Golfers who played here went on to become recognisable names well beyond East Africa — Bobby Locke, Bob Charles, Ian Woosnam, Sandy Lyle, Seve Ballesteros, and Nick Faldo among those whose names appear in the club's own tournament history.
Each one carried something of Muthaiga's fairways home with them.
