What Kenya's aquaculture economy actually contains — and what KMFRI knows about it
Kenya's aquaculture sector has grown faster than any other food production subsector over the past decade, driven by national government investment in pond infrastructure, growing urban fish demand, and KMFRI's selective breeding programme making improved tilapia genetics accessible to smallholder farmers.
But growth has been uneven and often sited poorly — farms placed in sub-optimal locations, with inadequate water supply, poor soil retention, or proximity to pollution sources. KMFRI's spatial suitability work through the SAWA platform directly addresses this — providing county governments and investors with a scientific basis for site selection decisions rather than guesswork.
The sector spans three distinct production systems — earthen pond culture (dominant inland), cage culture (Lake Victoria and the Rift Valley lakes), and emerging mariculture along the coast — each with its own economics, regulatory environment, species mix, and risk profile. Earthen Pond Culture
Kenya's dominant system by farm count. Concentrated in western Kenya (Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori) and parts of Central Kenya. Primary species: Nile tilapia and African catfish. KMFRI's Sangoro ARS is the national centre for pond culture research and improved broodstock production.
Cage Culture
Lake Victoria and Rift Valley lakes support Kenya's growing cage culture sector. Higher capital requirement than ponds; higher productivity per unit area. Lake Victoria's Kenyan waters offer significant untapped capacity for commercial cage systems, subject to KMFRI-informed spatial planning to avoid conflict with wild fisheries.
Mariculture
Kenya's least developed but highest-value potential system. KMFRI's Mombasa headquarters and Shimoni station lead research in seaweed cultivation, oyster farming, sea cucumber, and marine finfish mariculture. The Kwale and Kilifi coastlines have been identified as priority development zones in KMFRI's coastal aquaculture suitability assessments.
The SAWA suitability platform
SAWA — Spatial Aquaculture Suitability in West Africa (adapted for Kenya) — is KMFRI's GIS-based tool for identifying optimal aquaculture sites based on soil quality, water availability, land use, topography, and proximity to markets. It is the only scientifically grounded aquaculture site-selection tool in East Africa.
Key aquaculture species
Kenya's primary aquaculture species. KMFRI's F5/F6 improved GIFT-derived line yields 22% higher growth rates than unimproved stock. Suitable for pond and cage systems across all 47 counties where water is available.
Hardier than tilapia and tolerant of poor water quality, making it suitable for marginal sites. Growing demand in urban markets. KMFRI's research covers feed optimisation and disease management for catfish pond systems.
Kenya's coastal aquaculture pioneer. Seaweed farming at Shimoni and Vanga has been demonstrated and scaled by KMFRI in partnership with coastal communities. Low capital requirement; strong export market to Asia and Europe for carrageenan.
Pilot mariculture programmes at Mida Creek and Gazi Bay have demonstrated the feasibility of oyster culture in Kenya's mangrove-fringed coastal systems. KMFRI holds the baseline data on suitable sites and spat availability.
