Council & Governance

The Law Society of Kenya is governed by a Council of 20 advocates elected every two years by the membership. The Council sets policy, oversees the Society's operations, and represents the profession.

Council 2025–2027

The current council was elected in October 2025 and took office on 1 January 2026. Council members serve two-year terms and may be re-elected for a maximum of three consecutive terms.

Standing committees

Committees 2025–2027

The Council operates through eight standing committees. Each committee is chaired by a council member and may co-opt advocates with relevant expertise.

Complaints & Discipline Committee

Oversees the investigation and adjudication of professional misconduct complaints against advocates. Reviews case officer recommendations and makes disciplinary determinations.

Continuing Professional Development Committee

Sets annual CPD requirements, accredits training providers and programmes, and oversees the delivery of LSK's annual CPD calendar.

Law Reform & Legislation Committee

Reviews proposed legislation, prepares LSK's formal submissions to Parliament, and coordinates LSK's policy positions on matters affecting the profession and the rule of law.

Legal Aid & Pro Bono Committee

Coordinates the LSK Legal Aid Programme, accredits legal aid service providers, monitors case allocations, and advocates for expanded access to justice.

Finance & Audit Committee

Oversees financial management, reviews and approves the annual budget, commissions external audits, and ensures sound stewardship of LSK's resources.

Council elections

The LSK Council is elected by the full membership every two years. Elections are administered by the Elections & Constitutional Affairs Committee and conducted through secure online voting open to all advocates in good standing.

How LSK elections work

Nominations

Any advocate in good standing may nominate themselves or a peer for any council position.

Verification

The Elections Committee verifies nominees' eligibility and publishes the validated candidate list.

Online voting

Eligible advocates vote securely online through the LSK portal. Voting is open for 15 days.

Results

Results are declared by the returning officer and published on this page within 5 days of poll close.

Council meetings

The Council meets monthly. Minutes of all meetings are published within 30 days of the meeting and are available to all LSK members.
