People sometimes ask why Solio Lodge doesn't get the same spotlight as Giraffe Manor or Sasaab. It's a fair question, and the honest answer is that it was never supposed to.
When we talk about our five properties, we're careful not to describe them as five versions of the same thing. Giraffe Manor has its giraffes. Sasaab has its open desert and its helicopter. Sala's Camp has the migration at its own doorstep. Each of those was built, in some sense, around a single, unmistakable reason to come. Solio never had that — and for a long time, we treated that as something to eventually fix, rather than something the property was quietly getting right all along.

The property nobody built for a first trip
Solio sits beside one of Kenya's longest-running rhino sanctuaries — genuinely one of the country's real conservation success stories. But it doesn't have a single dramatic encounter the way Giraffe Manor does. What it has instead is time: longer, unhurried game drives inside the sanctuary, an evening with no scheduled activity, a pace that doesn't ask anything of you.
We've come to notice something over the years: guests rarely ask for Solio on a first trip with us. It's almost always a second or third stay — after someone has already had the more iconic experience elsewhere in the collection and found themselves wanting something different the next time. That pattern wasn't something we designed. We just noticed it happening, again and again, and eventually stopped fighting it.
What we'd tell you honestly
If you're planning a single, once-in-a-lifetime safari, we probably wouldn't lead with Solio. It's not built to carry that kind of weight on its own, and we'd rather say that plainly than oversell it to a guest who's picturing something more dramatic for their first trip. But if you've already had that trip — if you know roughly what a safari here feels like, and what you actually want more of — Solio tends to be exactly right.
We think that honesty matters more than making every property sound equally spectacular. Not everything we own needs to compete for the same kind of attention. Some of it is just meant to be good, quietly, for the people who find it at the right moment.
A note on what comes next
We don't have a plan to change Solio into something louder. If anything, the more we've sat with why it works, the more convinced we are that its quietness is the actual asset — not a gap to close.
