The Kenya Elephant GPS Tracking Dataset is WRTI's largest and most-used dataset, generated by the Elephant Ecology and Movement Research Programme based at WRTI's Amboseli Field Station. GPS collars are fitted to adult female elephants following ethical protocols approved by Kenya Wildlife Service and WRTI's Animal Ethics Committee. Data has been collected continuously since 2012 and is updated annually.

The dataset underpins publications including Kamau et al. (2021) in Biological Conservation (374 citations) and Osei et al. (2022) in Conservation Biology (482 citations). It is cited in Kenya's National Wildlife Corridors Conservation Strategy 2022–2030.

GPS collar specification
Savannah Tracking ST-12 GPS/GSM collars programmed to record a GPS fix every 60 minutes during daylight and every 2 hours at night. Collars transmit data via GSM to WRTI's base server within 4 hours of each fix. Battery life: 30–36 months. All collars are fitted with drop-off mechanisms.
Collaring protocol
Elephants are immobilised by WRTI veterinarians using etorphine administered by remote injection dart. Collars are fitted to adult females only (body weight >2,000 kg). Ethics clearance is required for all collaring events (WRTI Animal Ethics Committee, permit KWS-AEC). Average immobilisation time: 18 minutes.
Data processing and QC
  • Fixes with DOP >5 or fix quality = 0 removed from analysis datasets
  • Speed filter applied (fixes implying movement >8 km/h removed)
  • Behaviour states inferred from cluster analysis (R package adehabitatHR)
  • Ecosystem zone and land use classification applied via spatial overlay with WRTI 10m land use raster
  • All processing code available at github.com/WRTI-Kenya/elephant-gps-qc
Coordinate reference system
WGS 84 (EPSG:4326). For projected coordinates, WRTI recommends Arc 1960 / UTM Zone 37S (EPSG:21037) for southern Kenya sites.

The longest continuous camera trap dataset for large carnivores in East Africa. Covering 240 systematically placed camera stations across a 2,200kmΒ² area of the Maasai Mara ecosystem, the dataset records every detection event from 2010 to 2022. Individual lions have been identified by whisker spot patterns, and known individuals are cross-referenced to the WRTI Lion Register.

Camera trap equipment
Bushnell Core 20MP trail cameras with dual-sensor PIR detection. 30-second video + 3-image burst on trigger. Infrared illumination. Memory cards replaced every 4–6 weeks. Cameras serviced quarterly.
Station placement
240 stations on a 3km systematic grid across the 2,200kmΒ² study area. Cameras mounted at 40–60cm height facing game trails, waterhole approaches, and boundary features. Stations maintained at fixed locations since 2010 for time-series comparability.
Individual identification
Lions identified by whisker spot patterns (Hildebrand, 1980 method) by two independent WRTI identifiers. Wild dogs identified by coat pattern. Identifications below Medium confidence are marked accordingly and excluded from individual-level analyses.

The WRTI Black Rhinoceros Genotype Database is Kenya's national forensic reference database for black rhinoceros genetic material. It underpins WRTI's forensic identification programme for the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and provides genetic management data for Kenya Wildlife Service's rhino sanctuary breeding programme.

This dataset contains location-attributable individual profiles for a critically endangered species. Access requires a formal Data Sharing Agreement approved by WRTI's Data Governance Committee and KWS. Processing time: 21 working days. The database is used by WRTI's Genetics Laboratory as the reference against which forensic specimens are matched. Eligible applicants include: accredited research institutions, government wildlife agencies, and conservation organisations with a demonstrated need for population genetics or forensic analysis involving black rhinoceros.

Sample collection
Samples collected during routine capture and health monitoring operations by WRTI veterinarians in partnership with KWS. Tissue biopsies (3mm skin punch) or blood samples. All sampling approved by WRTI Animal Ethics Committee and KWS permit WRTI/AEC/2019-0012.
Genotyping
18-locus microsatellite panel developed specifically for black rhinoceros by WRTI Genetics Lab. DNA extracted using Qiagen DNeasy Blood & Tissue Kit. PCR amplification and fragment analysis on ABI 3730xl capillary electrophoresis platform. Genotyping error rate: <0.5% (determined from 148 blind replicate pairs).
Forensic use
For forensic identification applications, WRTI's laboratory uses 15-locus minimum match threshold (exclusion probability >0.9999). Court-admissible forensic reports are produced only by accredited WRTI forensic scientists and are not a product of the database itself.

The most-downloaded dataset in WRTI's repository. Contains population estimates with 95% confidence intervals for 47 wildlife species across 18 ecosystem zones in Kenya, from 1976 to 2023. The foundation of Kenya's wildlife population trend reporting and the primary data source for national wildlife policy.

The dataset includes metadata for each census event: survey methodology, area covered, observer team size, weather conditions, and quality rating. National-level aggregates and ecosystem-level breakdowns are provided in separate sheets/tables.

  • Aerial total count: elephants, rhinos (individual count in defined census blocks)
  • Aerial systematic reconnaissance flight (SRF): large ungulates, predators visible from air
  • Line transect distance sampling: medium mammals, large mammals in dense vegetation
  • Ground transect: small mammals, reptiles, selected bird species
Confidence intervals
CIs calculated using bootstrap resampling (1,000 iterations) where applicable. For individual counts, CIs based on observer re-count repeatability trials. Surveys with CV >30% are flagged in the quality column.

The Kenya Wildlife Corridor GIS Dataset provides polygon boundaries and attribute data for all 24 priority corridors identified in WRTI's national corridor assessment (Mwangi et al., 2022, Landscape Ecology). The dataset is produced and maintained by WRTI's GIS Laboratory and is updated annually as new GPS tracking data and habitat modelling results become available.

This is WRTI's most-requested spatial dataset and was cited in Kenya's National Wildlife Policy 2023. Provided in GeoJSON, Shapefile, and KMZ (Google Earth) formats. Coordinate reference system: WGS 84 (EPSG:4326).

Corridor delineation
Corridors delineated using Circuitscape least-cost path analysis with GPS tracking data as species presence input. Habitat resistance surface derived from WRTI 10m land use raster and NDVI time series. Buffer widths set to encompass 95% of recorded GPS crossings.
Quality and threat scores
Quality index calculated as weighted mean of NDVI, tree cover, and distance from settlements. Threat index calculated from encroachment rate, fence density, road density, and livestock pressure score. Both indices annually updated.
