KEMRI's innovation mandate is not incidental to its research mission. It is intrinsic to it. Kenya's health challenges will not be solved by technologies developed in other countries for other populations. They will be solved by innovations that emerge from the specific scientific knowledge of Kenya's disease ecology, genetic diversity, health system context, and community realities — knowledge that only KEMRI possesses at the depth and scale that innovation requires.

Rapid Point-of-Care Malaria Diagnostic Platform

A novel lateral flow diagnostic platform enabling rapid, accurate species-level identification of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. Designed for resource-limited community health settings — requires no electricity, no cold chain, and delivers results in under 15 minutes.

Primary Application
Community health settings across sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in high-transmission, low-resource environments where laboratory diagnostics are unavailable.

Natural Product Antimicrobial Compound Library

A proprietary library of over 500 bioactive compounds derived from Kenya's medicinal plant biodiversity, screened against panels of antimicrobial-resistant bacterial pathogens. Multiple lead compounds have demonstrated potent activity against WHO critical priority pathogens including carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae.

Novel Antimalarial Compound KMR-7

A synthetic compound derived from the KEMRI natural product screening programme, demonstrating nanomolar activity against artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains in in vitro models. Currently undergoing mouse model pharmacokinetic evaluation. First novel antimalarial lead compound wholly developed by an African research institution.

Exclusive Licence Available

Full exclusive commercial rights to a specified technology in a defined field of use and territory, for a defined period. Suitable for pharmaceutical partners seeking protected development and marketing rights.

Non-Exclusive Licence Available

Shared commercial rights allowing KEMRI to license the same technology to multiple parties. Suitable for organisations seeking access without exclusivity, at lower licensing cost.

Field-of-Use Restricted Licence Available

Exclusive rights within a specific application domain — for example, a diagnostic licence for malaria detection in clinical settings, while research use rights remain open.

Co-Development Agreement Preferred
