Our Innovation Identity
African Innovation, Built for African Health, Accessible to the World
KEMRI's innovation mandate is not incidental to its research mission. It is intrinsic to it. Kenya's health challenges will not be solved by technologies developed in other countries for other populations. They will be solved by innovations that emerge from the specific scientific knowledge of Kenya's disease ecology, genetic diversity, health system context, and community realities — knowledge that only KEMRI possesses at the depth and scale that innovation requires.
At the same time, KEMRI's innovation ecosystem is open. Its mandate and public-health orientation mean that its intellectual property, clinical infrastructure, and scientific expertise are accessible to industry partners, development organisations, and international collaborators who share the objective of improving health outcomes in Africa.
1
KEMRI is a source of innovation, not only a conductor of research
A research institution produces knowledge. An innovation institution produces knowledge and moves it toward application. KEMRI does both.
2
KEMRI's innovation is African in origin and global in relevance
KEMRI's diagnostics, surveillance tools, and drug development address health challenges that the global innovation ecosystem systematically underserves.
3
KEMRI's innovation ecosystem is open and accessible
Designed to be shared — with industry partners, development organisations, and public health systems — openness is a feature, not a constraint.
4
KEMRI is building Kenya's health innovation economy
Creating the institutional infrastructure — ethics, clinical capacity, biotechnology expertise, trained scientists — that makes Kenya a viable destination for health innovation investment.
