72 Hours: How KEMRI's Genomic Surveillance System Stopped an Outbreak Before It Spread
When an unusual respiratory illness cluster appeared in a Kenyan county health facility, KEMRI's Centre for Virus Research had sequenced the pathogen and delivered actionable intelligence to the Ministry of Health within three days. This is the story of what that infrastructure makes possible.
In late 2023, a county public health officer in central Kenya reported an unusual clustering of severe respiratory illness among previously healthy adults. Within 24 hours of sample receipt at KEMRI's Centre for Virus Research, the genomic sequencing process had begun. Within 72 hours, KEMRI had characterised the causative pathogen, identified its phylogenetic lineage, and delivered a full genomic intelligence report to Kenya's Ministry of Health, enabling the deployment of a targeted, evidence-based response before the cluster had grown beyond its initial geographic boundary.
This outcome — rapid characterisation, targeted response, outbreak contained — was only possible because of a decade of infrastructure investment: the sequencing equipment, the trained scientists, the bioinformatics pipelines, and the established relationship with the Ministry of Health that meant KEMRI's findings were acted upon immediately.
