What to Expect

Your perfect Bomas day

A typical visit is 3–4 hours. This sequence assumes you arrive in the morning and stay for the afternoon cultural show — the ideal Bomas day.

10:00 AM — Arrival
Arrive & Enter

Purchase your tickets at the gate (M-Pesa, card, or cash) or use your pre-purchased QR code ticket. Pick up the free visitor map at the gate. The grounds staff will orient you to the homestead zones and confirm the day's show time.

💡Arrive early on weekends — parking fills from 2 PM onward on Saturdays.
📍The Visitor Centre is immediately inside the main gate on your left.
10:15 AM – 12:30 PM
Explore the Homesteads

Walk through all 23 traditional homesteads at your own pace — or follow the Highlights Trail (6 key homesteads, 90 minutes) or the Full Immersion Trail (all 23, 3 hours). The grounds are quietest and most pleasant in the morning.

💡Start with the Rift Valley Zone (Maasai, Samburu, Pokot) — it's the furthest from the amphitheater, so work your way back for the show.
📸Best photography light is 10–11 AM. The ochre of the homestead walls catches morning light beautifully.
🗺Download the cultural trail map from cultural-trails.html before you arrive.
12:30 – 1:30 PM
Lunch at Utamaduni Restaurant

The Utamaduni Restaurant serves Kenyan cuisine in a cultural setting — ugali, nyama choma, sukuma wiki, githeri, and coastal dishes. Affordable, authentic, and well-positioned near the amphitheater for easy timing before the show.

💡Arrive before 12:30 PM on weekdays — it fills quickly with show-goers from 1 PM onward.
🍽️Homestead dining packages must be booked in advance — available with the Family Explorer and Deep Culture Pass packages.
1:45 PM — Head to Amphitheater
Claim Your Seat

Arrive at the amphitheater 45 minutes before the show starts to claim a good viewing position. The 3,000-seat amphitheater fills on weekends — front sections go quickly. Enhanced Seating ticket holders proceed to the designated front section.

💡Centre-front is best for acrobatics. Left side gives clearest view of the drum line entrance.
☀️The amphitheater is open air — bring sun protection on clear days. Afternoons can be very bright.
2:30 PM (Weekdays) / 3:30 PM (Weekends)
The Cultural Show

90–105 minutes of live performance by the Bomas Harambee Dancers — Kenya's premier cultural performance troupe since 1973. Warrior dances, sacred drumming, taarab music, acrobatic displays, and courtship dances from 23 Kenyan communities.

🥁The Embu sacred drumming and the Maasai adumu jumping dance are the two most-discussed performances. Neither can be adequately described — they must be seen.
📱Video recording is permitted for personal use. Flash photography during the show is discouraged out of respect for the performers.
4:15 PM onward
Craft Market & Departure

After the show, the artisan craft market adjacent to the amphitheater is at its liveliest — beadwork, carvings, textiles, and traditional crafts from Kenyan artisans. Allow 30–45 minutes to browse properly. Return visit discount offers are available from some stallholders.

💡Prices at the craft market are negotiable — good-natured bargaining is expected and enjoyed.
🚗Exit the car park before 6 PM — the evening rush on Langata Road begins around 5:30 PM on weekdays.
