The Kenyatta International Convention Centre was conceived in the decade following Kenya's independence — a statement in concrete and glass that the young nation intended to take its place in the world's most important conversations. Designed by the Norwegian architectural firm Norplan and completed in 1973, the 32-storey tower was the most ambitious structure in East Africa at the time of its construction.
Named for Kenya's founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, KICC was built not merely as a commercial conference facility but as a national institution with an explicit diplomatic purpose: to bring the world to Nairobi, and to show the world what an independent Kenya could offer.
In the five decades since its opening, KICC has hosted virtually every significant political, economic, and diplomatic gathering that has shaped East Africa's modern history. The Organisation of African Unity (now African Union), the United Nations Environment Programme, the East African Community, and dozens of bilateral and multilateral diplomatic processes have all made KICC their venue of choice when meeting in Nairobi.
In 2012, KICC underwent a comprehensive renovation, modernising its technical infrastructure while preserving its architectural character. Today, KICC operates as a State Corporation under Kenya's Tourism Act 2011, with a formal mandate to promote MICE activity nationally and to serve as Kenya's premier venue for events of international significance.
The building's government offices — including chambers that have housed the Kenyan Senate — reinforce what KICC has always been: not merely a venue for hire, but an instrument of national policy and a physical expression of Kenya's ambitions on the world stage.
KICC is governed by a Board appointed by Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, with day-to-day management under the Chief Executive Officer. The leadership team brings together expertise in hospitality, diplomacy, finance, and events management.
