Diploma in Education Leadership & Management
Lead Kenya's schools with the confidence, competence, and credibility that comes from Kenya's most rigorous qualification in education management — designed by practitioners, for practitioners.
Kenya's premier qualification for education leaders
Managing a school in Kenya today demands far more than subject expertise. Principals and headteachers navigate complex financial responsibilities, demanding governance relationships with boards of management, TSC regulatory requirements, community engagement, and the challenge of sustaining high-quality teaching and learning across diverse student populations.
The Professional Diploma in Education Leadership and Management was developed by KEMI's education management specialists to address precisely these demands — drawing on thirty years of research, advisory work, and programme delivery across Kenya's education sector. It is the only qualification of its kind designed by an institution with a national mandate to develop education managers.
The programme combines theoretical frameworks with practical application, peer learning from experienced school leaders, and direct mentorship from KEMI's faculty — producing graduates who are ready to lead their schools with measurably greater effectiveness from the moment they return to their institutions.
What you will be able to do
By the end of the Diploma programme, you will have developed eight core competencies that transform how you lead your school.
Programme structure
The diploma is delivered across two semesters of approximately sixteen weeks each. Each module combines taught content, case study analysis, peer discussion, and a practical assignment applied to your own school context.
Each module is assessed through a practical assignment applied to your own school. Module 8 culminates in a panel presentation. Graduates who complete all eight modules and the capstone project receive the Professional Diploma in Education Leadership and Management, issued by the Kenya Education Management Institute.
Designed specifically for serving school leaders
This diploma is designed for education professionals who are already in school leadership roles and want to formalise, deepen, and apply their expertise through a rigorous qualification.
Learn from Kenya's leading education management specialists
The diploma is facilitated by KEMI's most experienced education management practitioners — professionals who combine deep academic expertise with decades of practical experience in Kenya's education system.
Dr. Kamau brings over twenty years of research and advisory experience in education leadership and management to the diploma programme. He holds a PhD in Educational Administration from the University of Nairobi and has led KEMI's flagship diploma programme since 2015. His research on instructional leadership in Kenyan primary schools has been cited in Ministry of Education policy documents and published in the Journal of Education Management.
Prof. Njoroge is a specialist in school financial management and governance, with fifteen years of experience advising school boards and principals on financial compliance and institutional governance. She was previously Deputy Director of Education in Kiambu County and served on the Ministry of Education's financial management advisory panel. She leads Modules 3 and 5 of the diploma programme.
Mr. Mwangi brings extensive practical experience as a former secondary school principal — having served twelve years as principal of two large public secondary schools in Central Kenya before joining KEMI's faculty. He leads Modules 4 and 6, drawing on his direct experience of the challenges facing school leaders in day-to-day institutional management and stakeholder engagement.
From the people who have done it
Every testimonial below is from a named, attributed diploma graduate. These are real outcomes — not promotional copy.
The KEMI Diploma changed how I understand my role as a principal. Before, I managed day-to-day. Now I lead with a strategy. Within two terms of graduating, I restructured our staff development programme, and our average KCSE scores improved by three points — which I directly attribute to more systematic classroom observation and feedback.
I was skeptical that a diploma could change how I actually run my school. It did. The financial management module alone was worth the entire programme — I identified three compliance gaps in our budget process that I was not aware of. My BOM chair now treats our financial meetings very differently because my reporting has improved so significantly.
What I valued most was the peer learning. I was in a cohort with thirty principals from across Kenya — from Turkana to Mombasa. The conversations we had about the shared challenges of school leadership were as valuable as the formal content. Many of those colleagues are still people I call when I need advice.
As a county education officer rather than a school principal, I was not sure the programme would be relevant to my role. It was completely relevant — and the governance and stakeholder management modules were directly applicable to my work coordinating county education administration. I would recommend it to any senior education officer.
